Several uses of Highlighted Text
What is highlighted Text
You may no-doubt have run across portions of highlighted text in your day-to-day routine reading. This special text, of differing background, color or typeface, routinely inserted in written sentences, is designed to elicit some particular reaction from the reader. It may be to indicate emphasis or needed action, but every reader unconsciously reacts to highlighted text by giving priority to the text in question. Unconsciously, highlighted text gets priority attention whenever and wherever it is encountered in any and every sentence. While many of us may accept highlighted text at face value, others may have wondered how the process is applied on some text and not on others , usually in the same sentence. In today’s free computer training course for beginners, we shall look at some uses for highlighted text and their processes.
How to highlight a piece of text
In a previous lesson on using the keyboard, we would have run across the function of “highlighting” words by using the mouse. So the concept of word highlights should not be new to us. In this circumstance, highlighting text is known as “selecting” text. Granted the text highlights built into the mouse keys are just the tip of the proverbial iceberg and do not cover all the aspects of text highlighting. To highlight text with the mouse, simply place the mouse-pointer (caret) on either end of the text to be modified, press the primary key (as configured on your machine) and drag along the length of the word or phrase to be highlighted. The entire desired portion of text will receive a blue background. Release your primary key when you have reached the end of the desired text. Basic formatting functions should be already included in your computer operating system or word processing software. Simply choose the additional formats (symbolised by “b = bold, i=italics, etc;” as per menu ) you desire to add to your text (usually by mouse click) and the task is done.
How can highlighted text be used
From this point, any pre–programmed action may be performed on the highlighted text within the range of your mouse’s capabilities. You can delete, change typeface, italicize, darken, capitalize, reposition the text, etc, according to your mouse’s capability. However, as mentioned before, the pre-programmed actions of the mouse are not all the actions that can be performed on selected text. According to your computer expertise, additional operations can be employed on the selected text to achieve other effects. One very common use is to repurpose the text by attaching navigational links that lead the reader to particular destinations. As a matter of fact, this is one of the most-used functions and purposes of highlighted text. The entire industry of affiliate marketing depends on and utilizes this function.

Using highlight to Delete text
For most computer users, the highlighting process facilitates their need to delete aspects of their computer usage. Whether it be deleting pictures, written text or programs, the ability of the user to highlight and remove offending items with the click of a button, is a much-cherished function. To delete any item, simply highlight the item with the mouse, as mentioned before. Once completed, select the ” delete” function, per configuration, and simply click the deletion function desired. I say “delete function desired” because you may want to relocate the deleted item. The “delete” function gives you the option to temporarily “cut” out the offending item and relocate it, or permanently “delete” it or send it to the trashbin. Even then, a deleted item can be retrieved from the trash by the “Restore” function, which replaces the item into it’s original position.
Using highlight to move text Around
Repositioning text is a very frequent use of the highlight feature on the computer. Thanks to being a built-in function on practically every computer keyboard and mouse, the labor that this previously entailed seems like a horrendous fairy tale. Where this task previously required laboriously and technically precision cutting and insertion of the item, the computer has totally simplified the process, making it a sub function of the “delete” process. Now removing and replacing entire portions of text is as simple as selecting the text from beginning to end with the mouse, then cutting and repositioning exactly where desired. Once repositioned as desired, one more simple click fulfills the required task.
Placing and inserting text
Repositioning and inserting text has several slight differences according to the amount and purpose. Although the process is practically similar, there are applicable shortcuts for some operations. In the case of single letters, short insertions or removals, it is standard to drag the mouse along the entire length of the text being modified. However, when handling large items or multiple pages, it is possible to indicate the text by selecting the start and ending positions of the required text without dragging the mouse throughout the entire length of the task. By clicking the start position and the end position, most computers will understand that all material in between these points are included in the selection. This is useful for large portions of related material. Choose “cut”. To place and insert the text, simply place the cursor on the desired area and select “paste”. All material selected should relocate to the new position. Verify the ending positions and space accordingly.
Using Highlighted text for Attraction
Although the computer is exceptional at handling graphics, most operating systems tend to display text as black characters on white backgrounds. The one exception to this is displaying navigational links. These are usually portrayed as blue on white backgrounds. Navigational links have much more color options than regular text. With that said, please understand that regular text can be displayed in other than its basic black color without being navigational links. In many cases, color enhances the appearance of a text presentation, imparting a much-needed visual break from the norm. To achieve this effect, you will have to use dedicated word-processing software or utilize certain instructive commands in your operating system. All computer languages have them. If you are privy to such information, you may find it very surprising, delightful and instructive to apply it in producing your textual pieces. Although this course is dedicated to teaching you how to use your computer and not to teaching you computer languages, it may be useful to suggest understanding of the HTML command “SPAN”. You may find it helpful in your study of this subject.
